Looking for fun passages in warmer waters while it's winter here - Competent Crew, Delivery Crew.
I'm interested in some good sailing in the sun and learning more while my own boat is on the hard in Newport (actually at SafeHarbor NEB in Portsmouth). I'm looking for Mile Building, Competent Crew spots, Delivery Crew, or some racing.
I've sailed for around 40 years mostly day sailing and racing around Newport with several off-shore passages. I've got about 8,000 ocean passage miles and 1,000 coastal cruising.
In 1992 I joined the Cape to Rio race on a 40ft cruiser and long before that 28 day trip was over I realized I really enjoy long passages. Later I sailed Newport, RI to Falmouth, UK as delivery crew on an old IOR race boat 'Caribbean 1500' with a solo sailor who was racing back to the US. Around 1998, I did a Newport to Antigua delivery on a 68' Little Harbor 'Sans Terre'. In 2023, I joined 62' Little Harbor 'Summerland' for a trip from Hampton, VA to Palm Beach, FL. Most recently in 2024, I took my 30' O'day on a 14 day trip cruising Cape Cod and the islands.
I'm a very good general mechanic and I manage all repairs, maintenance, and upgrades on our 40 year old boat. I worked at Oldport Marine in high school/college and have built up a broad knowledge of boat systems, engine troubleshooting and systems maintenance.
I've never sought out any certifications until recently. I'm looking to build miles that can be signed off so I can go for my six-pack license. I'm also looking to gain experience toward my goal of feeling throughly qualified to (soon I hope) skipper a larger boat of my own on ocean passages.
I live in Newport, RI where I've been coastal cruising the cape and islands for the last 6 years on our 30 footer. I race occasionally — mostly I do mid-bow and some trimming on 12M 'Columbia'.
