Looking for a Novice Crew position
Hello, I work as a commercial pilot fighting the forest fires in Canada during the summer, and I want to spend my winters learning how to sail. 4 years ago a friend from work took me on his sailboat for the day, and it's been a dream of mine ever since.
I think that my experience as a commercial pilot has a lot of transferrable skills, such as teamwork, problem solving, and learning how the plane/ship works, air/sea law, etc. Most of my flight experience has been as a captain, but I also have extensive experience as the first officer, so I understand the importance of working under and learning from the captain.
I have some mechanical experience as an aircraft mechanic, as well as a basic understanding of diesel engines from working as a transport truck driver and on the farm. That being said, there is a lot that I don't know and I have a lot to learn.
Capable of working independently, but more importantly I respect the importance of asking for help if I don't know something.
I'm easy to get along with, and I'm an optimistic person who can stay calm in adverse conditions. At work I'm known as the guy who laughs when things go wrong and is able to find a solution to the problem.
Looking for a ship where I can learn sailing. I am prepared to work hard and do chores, as long as I also get to learn how everything works.
I'm also trying to learn French, so it would be great if you or someone on the ship speaks French so that I can practice.
