Job Overview: The Engineer is responsible for the safe and efficient operation, maintenance, and repair of all mechanical and electrical systems aboard the yacht, ensuring that all machinery functions optimally during the voyage. This includes managing everything from the main engine to auxiliary equipment such as generators, watermakers, pumps, and air compressors. The Engineer plays a critical role in maintaining the yacht’s operational readiness, supporting the crew and guests in the demanding Arctic environment. As the sole engineer onboard, the individual must be highly self-sufficient, proactive, and capable of managing all technical aspects of the vessel in an efficient and organized manner.

Key Responsibilities:
Mechanical & Electrical Systems Maintenance:
• Main Engine & Auxiliary Systems: Oversee the operation and maintenance of the main engine, auxiliary engines, and generators. Ensure that all power systems are operating smoothly, and conduct routine inspections to identify any potential issues.
• Drive Train & Shaft Seal: Maintain the vessel's drive train and shaft seal to ensure reliable propulsion during voyages. Conduct regular checks for wear and tear, and perform necessary repairs or adjustments.
• Main Switchboard & Electrical Systems: Manage the main electrical switchboard (230/440V 60Hz) and associated electrical systems, including distribution and monitoring of power across the vessel. Ensure all electrical systems, including emergency backup power, are in good working condition.
• Watermakers, Pumps & Filtration Systems: Maintain and monitor the operation of watermakers, water filters, and pumps, ensuring the vessel has a continuous and reliable supply of fresh water. Troubleshoot and repair any issues with water purification or circulation systems.
• Firefighting & Bilge Pumps: Oversee the operation and maintenance of firefighting systems, bilge pumps, and associated equipment. Ensure readiness for emergencies and compliance with safety protocols.
• Air Compressors & Hydraulic Systems: Maintain air compressors and hydraulic systems, including the hydraulic anchor winch, ensuring efficient operation. Perform regular inspections and address any technical issues promptly.
• Sewage Treatment & Fuel Systems: Ensure the proper functioning of the sewage treatment system, fuel pumps, and oil pumps. Regularly check for potential issues and maintain proper records of fuel usage and oil levels.
Engine Room Operations & Log Maintenance:
• Engine Room Maintenance: Maintain a clean, organized, and seamanlike engine room and machinery spaces, including the CO2 room. Ensure all areas are free from hazards and comply with safety standards.
• Planned Maintenance System (MARAD): Keep the yacht’s Planned Maintenance System (MARAD) up to date with regard to all engine room systems, ensuring that all maintenance tasks are logged, scheduled, and completed in a timely manner.
• Log & Record Keeping: Keep accurate records in the engine room log, including daily operational data, inspections, repairs, and maintenance activities. Maintain the oil record book and ensure it is up to date and compliant with maritime regulations.
• Bunkering Operations: Be responsible for bunkering the vessel with diesel and oil, ensuring that all fuel systems are properly managed and accounted for during refueling operations.
Tools & Spare Parts Management:
• Tool Organization: Ensure all engine room tools are properly organized, maintained, and returned to their designated locations after use. Maintain a clean and functional tool inventory to support maintenance and repair activities.
• Spare Parts Management: Keep an organized inventory of spare parts, ensuring that critical components are available and easily accessible in case of repairs. Proactively manage stock levels to minimize downtime due to part shortages.
Bridge & Operational Duties:
• Watchkeeping Duties: Depending on qualifications and certification, the Engineer may be required to take on bridge or ice lookout duties, assisting with navigational responsibilities or full watch duties when required. If dual-licensed, the Engineer may be expected to perform full navigational watch duties.
• Mooring Assistance: Assist the crew with mooring operations, ensuring safe and efficient docking or anchoring. Operate deck equipment as needed to facilitate these operations.
Zodiac Operations:
• Maintenance & Repair of Zodiacs: Oversee the maintenance and repair of all Zodiacs, ensuring they are in good working order for use during shore excursions or other operations.
• Launching & Crane Operations: Assist with the launching and retrieval of Zodiacs, including the operation of the crane and other deck equipment. Ensure the safe handling of tenders for passenger use.
Emergency Preparedness:
• Emergency Duties: As designated in the muster list, the Engineer will be assigned emergency roles, which may include responding to machinery failures, assisting with firefighting or evacuation efforts, and helping with the overall emergency response as part of the crew.
• Safety Compliance: Ensure the readiness and functionality of all safety equipment related to machinery, including fire suppression systems in the engine room and bilge spaces. Actively participate in safety drills and emergency preparedness exercises.
Work Schedule & Hours:
• Standard Work Hours: The Engineer is expected to work a standard 12-hour day, though flexibility is required depending on operational needs, including during challenging Arctic conditions, mechanical issues, or urgent repairs. The role demands a proactive and flexible approach to ensure the smooth running of the yacht’s systems.

Skills & Qualifications:
• Experience: A minimum of 5 years of experience in a maritime engineering role, ideally on yachts, expedition vessels, or in similar environments. Experience in cold-water or Arctic conditions is highly preferred.
• Engineering Qualifications: Relevant certifications, including STCW certification, Engine Officer qualifications and medical certification as required for the role. Familiarity with yacht-specific machinery and systems is a plus.
• Technical Skills: Strong knowledge of mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic systems. Proven ability to troubleshoot, repair, and maintain a wide range of machinery, including engines, generators, pumps, and control systems.
• Safety & Emergency Response: In-depth understanding of maritime safety systems, emergency procedures, and firefighting protocols. Ability to respond to crises calmly and effectively.
• Problem-Solving & Initiative: Must be highly self-sufficient, capable of working independently to identify, diagnose, and resolve technical issues promptly.
• Organizational Skills: Strong attention to detail and organizational ability, especially in managing logs, maintenance schedules, inventory, and spare parts.

Work Environment:
The Engineer will work aboard an Arctic expedition yacht, where the conditions can be demanding and remote.
