Watch: Intro to life on board

Deckhand - Permanent - $300-$350 p.w+accomodation+meals+tallship training - Australia

If you've always wanted to sail in a tall ship or looking to develop your tall ship skills - this is your chance. The company SYDNEY HARBOUR TALL SHIPS has three historic sailing ships which cruise regularly on Sydney Harbour and occasionally offshore. Our job is to share the excitement and romance of tall ship sailing and the delights of Sydney Harbour and the Australian coastline with local and international visitors.

Australia is now open to international visitors and we are NOW TAKING ON NEW CREW. If you are available now or later in the year you are welcome to apply for a position. Please state the range of dates you would be available for.

We are looking for enthusiastic young crew who love working with and serving people and are not afraid of heights, since part of the job is 'laying aloft' and furling the sails. The job is multi-faceted and every day is different - excellent customer service is paramount and a high regard for cleanliness. You will be serving food, serving at a bar, sailing the ship and doing some maintenance jobs. You have a friendly nature, are responsibly minded and enjoy the satisfaction of making people happy. Sailing experience is valued but not essential - your willingness to learn is more important. We have a well structured training programme for all crew.

Non smoking policies apply at Sydney Harbour Tall Ships.

An Australian Holiday Working Visa is required for foreign crew. This is NOT available in some countries, unfortunately, including African countries (including South Africa), Indonesia and the Philippines.

Visas CAN be obtained for people from UK, Ireland, most European countries (EU) Canada, USA, NZ, Japan, South Korea, Taiwan and some other countries. Special visas may be available for people from Hong Kong and Ukraine; To see if you are eligible please check; https://immi.homeaffairs.gov.au/visas/getting-a-visa/visa-listing/work-holiday-462 and https://immi.homeaffairs.gov.au/visas/getting-a-visa/visa-listing/work-holiday-417
If you are not from one of those countries/regions you will NOT get a holiday/work visa and therefore we cannot accept you, unless you have family in Australia who might be able to help obtain a visa on that basis.

You will need to be 18-30 yrs old (or in some cases up to 35 years old) to obtain the holiday/work visa. Sydney Harbour Tall Ships is not able to offer sponsorships.

We expect crew to be fully vaccinated against Covid-19 and strongly advise crew to have the current flu vaccination for their protection and the protection of fellow crew and passengers.

If you're considering a maritime career or just looking for adventure and enjoy being part of a friendly community this is a great opportunity for those who are eligible to work and travel in Australia.

Live-aboard positions are available (with all meals provided) plus approximately $300-$350/week bursary (tax free) + 10.5% superannuation which can be claimed as a lump sum upon departure from Australia .
Please express your interest in this position on CrewBay. A detailed information sheet will be sent to all promising and eligible applicants.
We look forward to hearing from you.

  • Boat descriptionWe actually have four historic vessels in Sydney, including three sailing ships. All vessels are built of timber and comply to the strict safety standards required in Australia. Our two larger vessels, Southern Swan and Soren Larsen are 210 tonnes and 295 tonnes displacement. They were built in Denmark in 1922/1948. Their maximum speed is about ten knots and they can sail about 75 degrees to windward - good for broad reaching and running! The baby of our fleet, Ho-Ho II (currently named Coral Trekker) is a famous Norwegian vessel with an amazing history. She was built in 1949 and displaces 50 tonnes. Crew are accommodated in comfortable cabin bunks and receive three meals per day in addition to the bursary and tall ship training.
